There is No God? It’s Still a Matter of Faith

atheism-non-prophet-tshirtThe fool has said in his heart, there is no God.” Psalm 14 (NKJV)

Now, I don’t anyone who would actually call the famous Steven Hawking a “fool.”

He was a brilliant scientist but he seemed to have lacked a certain level of logic.

Why do I say that?

Because logic and reason do not prove there is no God, nor does it prove that there is a God. We either believe there is by faith or we believe there is not – again, by faith.

There is No God? That’s Still Faith

The definition of faith in the dictionary is “a firm belief in something for which there is no proof.”

For Christians, our faith is not only that there is a God, but our faith is IN God. Conversely, non-believers have faith that there is no God because there is no scientific proof of it. However, there is no scientific proof that there isn’t either.

Therefore, we all have some kind of faith. Where you put that faith determines what your afterlife will be, if you believe in an afterlife.

We All Practice Some Type of Faith on a Daily Basis

Very little that we do every day is done without faith. We have faith that our car will get us where we need to go. We certainly can’t prove beyond doubt that it won’t get a flat tire, blow a hose or any number of issues that will take a car off the road.

As long as we maintain the vehicle, we can have a relative assurance that it will stay on the road, but really, what we’re saying is we have faith in our vehicle that will stay reliable.

Whenever you board a plane, you putting your faith in the pilot, crew and the plane itself that you will land safely at your destination.

There are countless scenarios every single day where faith plays a major role in our lives, although some may choose not to call it “faith” and simply consider it coincidence or something that was supposed or not supposed to happen.

What If You’re Wrong That There is No God?

An interesting argument as to why it’s better to believe there is a God than not is Pascal’s Wager. Our pastor mentioned this in our church service this morning. It makes a lot of sense when you think about it.

there is no god pascal's wager

  • If you believe in God and accept His salvation, there IS a God, and you were right, your reward is an eternal life with Him in Heaven.
  • If you believe in God and accept His salvation, there is NO God, and you were wrong, you simply cease to exist after you die. You’ve lost nothing.
  • If you do not believe in God but there IS a God, and you were wrong, you get to meet Satan in Hell after you die. And it’s not like on the show “Supernatural” either.
  • If you do not believe in God, and there is NO God, and you were wrong, you simply cease to exist after you die. You’ve lost nothing.

The bottom line? I’d rather believe that God exists, have faith in Him and be wrong than to not believe and be wrong.

Logic and reason dictate that it takes just as much faith to believe there is no God as it does to believe that there is. Personally, I’ve seen and felt miracles in my life that I know aren’t just coincidences. I don’t just believe there is a God, I know it. I’ve felt it.

Accepting Him into my heart as a Christian believer and recently renewing my faith in the Lord opened my eyes to things I may have just dismissed as mere coincidences had I been a non-believer.

There’s More to Just Believing if You Want to Go to Heaven

Simply having faith that God does exist and working to be a good person will not get you into Heaven once you pass on from the Earth. You must do more than just say, “Yeah, I believe there’s a God.” And you can’t just “buy a stairway to heaven” either.

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6 (NKJV)

For the wages of sin is death, but the [a]gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23 (NKJV)

that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Romans 10:9-10 (NKJV)

You must make that claim that you believe Jesus died on the cross for your sins, was crucified, died, buried and rose again. That is the path to true Salvation and the reward of Heaven waiting on the other side.
