We’ve all heard the phrase ‘Patience is a Virtue,’ but did you know that patience is key to success? The Bible mentions the word ‘patience’ 25 times but my favorite passage is in James and speaks of patience as the product of a tested faith. And in business, our faith may be tested every day.
Patience is Key to Building a New Business
I’m not a patient person by nature. This is probably why for many years I fell into some of the get-rich-quick scams and business opportunities that pop up all over the ‘net. I then grew impatient for things to start happening so I could make some fast money.
One after the other for a couple of years, they all failed. None turned out to be fast moneymakers and I lacked the patience to keep going.
Then back in 2013 I launched an information blog about vaping. I decided to practice patience with it and see where it would go. I actually stuck with it for six years, even though it never made me any real cash.
I lost interest in it during its last year or so and rarely wrote any new blog posts myself. I had many people submit guest posts for the blog, so that’s what kept it going while I tried to figured out what to do next.
Be Patient – Take Baby Steps
A little over a month ago I started doing daily devotionals and trying more to listen to what God wanted me to do. T-shirts kept popping up in my mind, and although I had some vaping t-shirts designed, I wasn’t selling any. I also kept feeling like this wasn’t what Jesus wanted me to be doing.
I kept hearing the words, ‘Be patient.’ So I waited and kept the vape blog online a little while longer while continuing my daily devotionals.
And again, t-shirts, but this time I felt like I was hearing ‘Jesus T-shirts.’ And that’s how this business and blog were launched.
Take Your Time and Stick With It
Building a new business takes time and perseverance, and patience is key to its success. Patience, plus doing what the Lord wants you to do. As Christians, we’re supposed to use our talents to do God’s work, or do our work in God’s name.
Since I felt like this is the business Jesus wants me in, I needed a little extra help. Fortunately, I’d been following Ron Gelok, a Christian business coach, for some time and decided to contact him.
We discussed my business idea and he thought it was a great idea! So did I. I feel it’s a way to help spread the word of Jesus nationwide, if not worldwide, profess my faith and eventually, with patience, earn an income from the business.
We ended the call with prayer that God would see my new business as a blessing to Him and prayed for its success, if it was His will.
It’s Not the Same Internet Today
But it will still take patience! Every day when I sit to write a new blog post or create a new design, I hear His words, ‘Be patient.’ The internet isn’t what it was way back in the day when I was building my first blog. It’s not even the same as when I started the vaping blog back in 2013.
An online business is not a “build it and they will come” venture anymore. It takes time, trial and error, sharing on social media and… Patience. Lord willing, this new business will grow as something pleasing to Jesus. He may even chuckle occasionally at my designs.
About a month into this new business and I did make two small sales. I considered that a step in the right direction and a reminder that sometimes things start small and grow as time goes on. And Lord willing, I can maintain my patience as the business grows.
What kind of a business do you have? Is God first in your business?
